Multiplying

Multiplying complex numbers operates similarly to multiplying polynomials. When multiplying complex numbers use the Distributive Property to multiply every term of one complex number by every term of the other complex number, then simplify by combining like terms. When simplifying, remember that i2 = -1.



Example 1

Simplify the following expression

Step 1 . Multiply each term in the first complex number through the second complex number.

Step 2. Use the Distributive Property on the two new terms.

Step 3. Multiply the monomials in each term.

Step 4. Replace i2with -1 and simplify.

Step 5. Combine like terms, if needed, and write in standard form.

Example 2

Step 1. Simplify the radicals using imaginary numbers.
