Description
Using Square Roots
Number of Solutions
The standard form of a quadratic equation is: ax 2 + bx + c = 0 . Solving quadratic equations will result in two, one or no real solutions. Since a quadratic equation contains a squared term, square roots will be needed to find solutions. Remember that the square root of a positive number produces a positive and negative answer. For example,

Example 1
Solve the equation
Step 1. Isolate the x2 -term.
Step 2. Take the square root of both sides.
*Note: x = 5 or -5 are the two solutions to the equation. They are also the x -intercepts of the graph.
Example 2
Solve the equation
Step 1. Isolate the x2 -term.
Step 2. Take the square root of both sides.
